French government announces a legal offensive amid the unrest

On October 19, French official Sébastien Lecornu announced the launch of "a massive judicial operation" amid the unrest and protests currently gripping the country.

"The French people need to understand how these disturbances have been organized in an entirely unprecedented way: during the day by the far-left, and at night through common criminal activity," he stated upon leaving an interministerial crisis cabinet meeting.

Given this situation, he called for "a firm criminal-law response to the violent acts" that, this weekend, culminated in looting across several Paris neighborhoods and even the seizure of a municipal police vehicle.

Furthermore, Lecornu warned that "the police must not be exploited as a tool in the presidential election debate," and he lamented the contradictory criticisms directed at officers. "For the past three weeks, we’ve been told that the police kill and injure people, yet for the last two days, people have been asking: 'What are the police doing?' It’s a very French form of schizophrenia," the minister remarked.

Lecornu announced also this Monday, October 19, following a meeting of an interministerial crisis task force, that he has instructed prefects to implement a number of partial, localized curfews.
