Japan may allow ships carrying nuclear weapons to enter its ports

The Japanese government is discussing the possibility of making an exception to its existing non-nuclear principles in the event of an emergency.

Currently, the country adheres to a policy of neither possessing, producing, nor bringing nuclear weapons into the country.

According to the Sankei newspaper, this could involve allowing U.S. ships carrying nuclear weapons to enter Japanese ports. However, Tokyo does not intend to abandon the three non-nuclear principles entirely at this stage.

New provisions could be incorporated into the security documents that Japanese authorities plan to adopt by the end of 2026. Discussions are also underway in the country regarding the strengthening of the naval fleet, including the possibility of acquiring nuclear-powered submarines.
