Separatist leader Puigdemont allowed to return to Spain

Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont is permitted to return to his native Spain after nine years in Belgian exile: on Tuesday, the Spanish Constitutional Court ruled that the arrest warrant issued against the 63-year-old politician in 2017 must be lifted.

In the case of another Catalan separatist, Dolors Bassa, the Supreme Court ruled that the 2024 amnesty law also nullifies charges of embezzlement. This removes the legal basis for the arrest warrant against Puigdemont and other Catalan separatists.

In 2017, Catalan separatists had organized a referendum on Catalonia's secession against the wishes of the Spanish central government and subsequently declared independence.
