October has been the worst month for attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz so far, according to data compiled by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and reported by Reuters.
The group recorded at least 28 confirmed strikes on vessels in the waterway this month, bringing its tally of reported attacks to 113 since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran in February.
The numbers broadly aligned with data from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which recorded a total of 120 incidents since the war began.
However, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it had counted 135 reported incidents as of October 16, adding that not all attacks may be captured in reported data.
Reuters calculations based on IMO data showed that 3.5 percent of the world’s supertanker fleet – a total exceeding 900 vessels – had been attacked during the conflict.
