The Trump administration has suggested that former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán put himself forward as a candidate for the office of UN Secretary-General. A final decision has yet to be made.
Sources for the WSJ believe that Russia and China might support Washington’s initiative, which would make Orbán the joint candidate of the three major powers.
"If the US, Russia, and China want the same candidate in the UN Security Council, they generally get their way," the newspaper reports, citing unnamed officials.
Russia and China have not publicly declared their support for Orbán. According to the WSJ, the former prime minister himself is unwilling to enter the fray unless he is certain of victory. He has declined to comment. One of the newspaper’s sources claims that Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance would support Orbán, should he decide to run. An announcement regarding his candidacy could come after the midterm congressional elections on November 3.
