US to deploy anti-ship missiles near Taiwan for first time

The US military will deploy the advanced NMESIS anti-ship missile system to Japan’s Yonaguni Island near Taiwan for the first time during major joint drills with Japan, Bloomberg reported, citing sources.

According to them, the system will be deployed to Yonaguni during the Keen Sword exercise, scheduled for October 19-29. The Japanese military may also deploy its own anti-ship and air-defense missile systems on the island.

Yonaguni lies about 110 kilometers east of Taiwan and is Japan’s closest territory to the island. NMESIS has a range of about 185 kilometers, allowing it to strike ships in the waters around Taiwan.
