The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has yet to receive a response from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as part of its investigation into the procurement of Pfizer vaccines during the pandemic, Politico reported on October 28.
"Von der Leyen has not provided a personal statement to the EPPO as part of its investigation into the procurement of coronavirus vaccines," the publication states.
In an interview with the newspaper, European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi noted that some politicians within the bloc consider themselves above the law and refuse to provide testimony. However, she declined to comment on specific cases when asked about the investigation into the European Commission President.
The investigation, unofficially dubbed "Pfizergate," concerns potential irregularities in the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines and treatments for European Union member states. It was prompted by suspicions regarding a lack of transparency in the European Commission leadership's dealings with pharmaceutical companies.
In June 2025, more than 70 Members of the European Parliament supported a motion of no confidence in the President of the European Commission, citing the concealment of information regarding COVID-19 vaccine procurement contracts. Shortly thereafter, the parliamentarians rejected both resolutions.
