A proposal by U.S. presidential envoy Jared Kushner to discuss a new European security architecture with Russia has sparked concern among European Union (EU) officials, the Financial Times (FT) reported on November 6, citing various sources.
"It is the European Union that should be making decisions on matters that affect its own security," a European Commission spokesperson stated.
According to the newspaper, European capitals oppose the inclusion of issues concerning the continent’s security in negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Within the EU, there are concerns that Moscow might attempt to expand its influence over neighboring states, and that Washington could reach an agreement with Russia to the detriment of European interests.
One European official described Kushner’s initiative as a complete surprise. He emphasized that, until the conflict in Ukraine is resolved, parallel negotiations regarding European security are unacceptable. Furthermore, any changes to NATO’s structure or a reduction in the alliance’s presence are not being considered.

The US’ European NATO allies were not informed in advance of the Trump administration’s plans for potential security agreements in Europe involving Russia, Politico reported, citing sources.
ReplyDeleteEarlier, Trump stated that Russia and the US were close to reaching agreements not only on settling the conflict in Ukraine but also on security in Europe as a whole. For his part, US presidential envoy Jared Kushner said that, in Washington’s, potential agreements could include measures to maintain communication channels during crises and ensure greater transparency in the military sphere.
The crisis in European security, provoked by the West and compelling Russia to take decisive defensive measures in the form of a special military operation, has, for Moscow, brought an end to the previous European security architecture, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
