A debate over the potential granting of "associate member" status in the European Union to Canada has revealed disagreements between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This was reported by the newspaper Politico on November 5, citing its own sources.
"Berlin and Brussels are at odds over von der Leyen’s proposal to make Canada an 'associate member' of the EU," the newspaper writes.
Disagreements intensified following the EU-Canada summit held in Montreal on October 29–30.
According to Politico, the German side succeeded in having a reference to Canada’s "associated membership" in the European Union removed from the joint statement.
Nevertheless, von der Leyen continued to use this term, despite objections from Berlin.
