United Ossetia Receives Absolute Majority in Parliamentary Elections

The United Ossetia party received the absolute majority of votes in Sunday's parliamentary elections in the former Georgian republic, to obtain 20 seats of the 34-seat South Ossetian parliament, according to the central election commission. 

“The United Ossetia receives 20 out of 34 seats, its runner-up Unity of the People gets six seats, two other parties, Unity and Nykhas, receive four seats each,” the commission reported.

Nine parties were competing Sunday for seats in the parliament, which is elected under a proportional representation system for a five-year term.

NATO Defence Ministers met with their Georgian counterpart, Irakli Alasania, on Wednesday (4 June) to discuss the regional implications of Russia’s illegal aggression against Ukraine and to review Georgia’s progress in reforming its defence sector. “NATO Allies do not, and will not, recognise Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.

“Neither do we accept Russia’s recognition of the South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions of Georgia as independent states. NATO stands up for the right of every nation to make its own sovereign choice on foreign and security policy,” he said.  

Medvedev Warns Ukraine of Possible State Collapse

The ongoing “rule of radicals, militants and bandits” may result in the collapse of the Ukrainian state, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev wrote in his Facebook page on Friday.
The Russian premier wrote in his Facebook blog that the new authorities in Kiev “lack due legitimacy and, worse, are practically unable to leverage situation in the country.”
“The power in the hands of various radicals, militants and bandits. They have the final say, and, most likely, they will continue having it after the May 25 [elections]. There’s no reason for them to share power with others. A government of this kind inevitably results in a collapse of a state,” he wrote.

Abkhazie/Ossétie: l'Otan appelle Moscou à revenir sur la reconnaissance...

Le secrétaire général de l'Otan Anders Fogh Rasmussen a une nouvelle fois appelé la Russie à revenir sur sa reconnaissance de l'indépendance de l'Abkhazie et de l'Ossétie du Sud, lit-on mercredi dans la déclaration du chef de l'Alliance.

"La position de l'Otan est parfaitement explicite. Comme il a été indiqué lors du sommet de Chicago (mai 2012), l'Alliance soutient la souveraineté et l'intégrité territoriale de la Géorgie dans ses frontières internationalement reconnues", a déclaré M.Rasmussen.

Le secrétaire général a exprimé sa préoccupation par les activités incessantes de la Russie en matière de démarcation de la frontière, soulignant que cela ne contribuait guère au règlement politique du conflit et se trouvait en contradiction avec les engagements de Moscou.
