Low turnout may affect mandate: Al-Sisi takes Egypt in election landslide

Former Egyptian army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi won a landslide victory in a presidential election on Thursday but a low turnout may have deprived him of the strong mandate he needs to fix the economy and face down an Islamist insurgency.

Sisi won 93.3 percent of votes cast, judicial sources said, with most ballots counted after three days of voting. His only rival, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, gained 3 percent while 3.7 percent of votes were declared void.

But a lower-than-expected turnout figure raised questions about the credibility of a man idolized by his supporters as a hero who can deliver stability.

Joint statements of Deputy PM and FM Venizelos and His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa, following their meeting. -MFA

MFA, Friday, 28 March 2014
E. VENIZELOS: His Beatitude and I cooperate very closely, because he monitors the issues that concern an exceptionally critical region. He is fully apprised of the developments in Egypt, where he is a major and broadly recognized figure. He has very close relations with General Al-Sisi, who is one of the candidates for president of Egypt, and of course he follows all the issues on the great African continent very closely.

We had the opportunity to talk about ecclesiastical issues as well, following the Synaxis of the Primates of the Orthodox Churches, in Istanbul, as well issues of Mediterranean and African policy, which are of very great importance, and I thank him warmly for his help.
