Excavations start at suspected mass graves near Tikrit

Iraqi forensic teams have begun excavating 12 suspected mass grave sites thought to hold the corpses of as many as 1,700 soldiers massacred last year by by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant fighters as they swept across northern Iraq.

Shi'ite fighters leave Tikrit under govt deal after looting, Iraqi officials say

Shi'ite paramilitaries started leaving Tikrit on Saturday following a government deal after locals complained that some fighters had spent several days looting the Sunni city after helping retake it from Islamic State.

"As of this afternoon, the (paramilitaries) started to leave the city towards the surrounding areas outside," said Ahmed al-Kraim, the head of the council of Tikrit and its province Salahuddin.

Iraqi forces need support from coalition air strikes in Tikrit, where die-hard jihadists are defending their last redoubt with trenches, sandbags and roadside bombs, a top officer said on Sunday.

Two weeks into Baghdad's biggest operation yet against the Islamic State (IS) group, Iraqi forces have a complete stranglehold on Tikrit but have yet to launch a final assault.

Iraqi forces retake key town of Al-Baghdadi from ISIL/ISIS (Town in Anbar cleared by government troops and allied fighters...)

Iraqi government forces and allied tribal fighters have retaken the town of Al-Baghdadi from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, according to the US military.

A statement from the headquarters of the US-led coalition on Friday said security forces and tribal fighters from the Anbar region had successfully cleared Al-Baghdadi of ISIL fighters, retaking both the police station and three Euphrates River bridges.

US military's Mosul briefing inaccurate, misguided, Carter says

A US military official who briefed news media about Iraq's upcoming offensive to retake Mosul provided inaccurate information but should never have publicly discussed war plans anyway, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Tuesday.

Carter's criticism of the February news briefing by an official from the US military's Central Command was accompanied by an assurance from the top U.S. military officer to Congress that the matter was subject to an internal inquiry.
