Ukraine’s presidential candidate insists on objective probe into May 2 riots in Odessa

Serhiy Tihipko, a member of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, and a candidate for Ukrainian presidency, has called on the official authorities to carry out an objective investigation into the death of people in the Odessa unrest on May 2, as well as in Kiev’s central Independence Square, known as Maidan, in February.

“If the tragedy in Odessa is not investigated, as well as the other one that occurred on Maidan in Kiev, when a hundred young people died on both sides, there will be no peace in the country,” he told the nationwide telethon “Peace Is Above All” on Thursday.

US Senators launch fresh ‘genocide’ bill

Two pro-Armenian senators have formally launched a fresh effort for the passage in the U.S. Senate of an “Armenian genocide” resolution.

“Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, during which 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turkey ... To honor the survivors and the memory of those lost, and to lead globally on human rights, the United States should finally join the European Union and 11 of our NATO allies in officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide,” Mark Kirk, a Republican from Illinois, said.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their forebears were killed in 1915 and 1916 by the forces of Ottoman Empire.

Michelle Obama on Saturday told students in China, which has some of the world’s tightest restrictions on the internet, that freedom of speech and unfettered access to information make countries stronger and should be universal rights.

The first lady was speaking Saturday at Peking University in Beijing during a week-long trip aimed at promoting educational exchanges between the US and China. The trip also took on political overtones when she was granted a previously unscheduled meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping on Friday.

"Ο πάπας θέλει να πάει στην Αρμενία", τιτλοφορεί σημερινό της άρθρο η εφημερίδα της Ρώμης "Ιλ Μεσατζέρο".
Όπως αναφέρει η "Ιλ Μεσατζέρο", η κυβέρνηση της Αρμενίας κάλεσε επίσημα τον Αργεντινό ποντίφικα να επισκεφθεί, το 2015, το Γιερεβάν, στα πλαίσια των τελετών μνήμης για τα εκατό χρόνια από την Γενοκτονία των αρμενίων.
Ο πνευματικός πατέρας των ρωμαιοκαθολικών απάντησε στον Αρμένιο πρέσβη στο Βατικανό, ότι "θα κάνει ότι του είναι δυνατόν" για να πραγματοποιήσει το ταξίδι αυτό.
Όπως αναφέρει ο ιταλικός τύπος, "όταν ήταν αρχιεπίσκοπος του Μπουένος 'Αιρες, ο πάπας Βεργκόλιο είχε τονίσει, με ξεκάθαρο τρόπο, ότι "αυτή των Aρμενίων ήταν η πρώτη γενοκτονία του περασμένου αιώνα".

Ankara upset at Vatican for pope’s remarks on mass killings of Armenians

Turkey has reacted angrily to the Vatican following a statement from Pope Francis describing the mass killings of Armenians during World War I as “the first genocide of the twentieth century” during a meeting with a delegation led by Patriarch of Cilicia of Armenian Catholics on June 3.

“The Turkish Foreign Ministry delivered Turkey’s views on the issue and expressed disappointment to the embassy in Ankara and Vatican in Rome yesterday,” a Turkish diplomat told the Hürriyet Daily News on June 7.

Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Act Introduced in U.S. House

WASHINGTON, DC –
As Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Erdogan continues his official U.S. state visit, a bipartisan group of U.S. Representatives introduced the Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Act, a new measure calling upon the President to build upon the U.S. record of having recognized the Armenian Genocide by working toward improved Armenian-Turkish relations based upon the Republic of Turkey’s full acknowledgement of the facts and ongoing consequences of the Armenian Genocide, and a fair, just, and comprehensive international resolution of this crime, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

“We welcome today’s introduction of the Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Act,” said Aram Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA. “This innovative bipartisan initiative, building upon the U.S. record of having recognized the Armenian Genocide, calls for a new U.S. approach to Armenian-Turkish ties that reflects our America values and recognizes that our national interests require an end to Turkey’s denials and a truthful, just, and comprehensive international resolution of this crime.”
