According to the poll by the local Rating agency, an overwhelming 81 per cent of the respondents say the government should stop splashing out on new monuments as part of its grand revamp of the capital known as Skopje 2014.

Only 18 per cent opted for more statues while the rest, less than 1 per cent, said they were not sure.

The issue has sparked a lively debate this week in parliament after the opposition Social Democrats used these numbers to attack the ruling centre-right VMRO DPMNE party for its spending habits at a time of crisis.

Greek border services have started covering the letters "MK" on FYROM's car number plates with a sticker of their own, marking a new low in Greek-FYROM relations.
Greek border guards have begun covering the letters "MK" on FYROM's car plates with a sticker, in Greek and English, reading: “Recognized by Greece as FYROM” [Former Yugoslav Republic of "Macedonia"].

FYROM' s  Presidential office is playing down the significance of Gjorge Ivanov’s absence from Monday’s inauguration of his Serbian counterpart, Tomislav Nikolic.

“We got the invitation but we decided not to go,” President Ivanov’s office said, explaining that the no-show should not be interpreted as a sign of a rift between the two leaders, who are due to meet later this week in Belgrade at a conference on regional cooperation.

FYROM news: NATO Doors Remain Closed to FYROM ...

FYROM news
news from FYROM

NATO and US officials have put an end to FYROM’s slim hopes that it may get anything more than warm words at the forthcoming NATO summit in Chicago in a few days.
Resolving the "name" dispute with Greece remains the condition for FYROM’s NATO accession, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told Radio Free Europe ahead of the summit that starts on May 20-21.

The Alliance's position remains unchanged, he said, and is still based on the decision taken at the 2008 Bucharest summit, when NATO deemed FYROM ready to join once it concludes the long-standing name issue with Greece.
