Greek Presidency closes deal on Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM)

The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU (COREPER) today approved the provisional agreement reached between the Presidency and the Parliament on the Regulation on a Single Resolution Mechanism.

Welcoming the approval of the deal, the President of the ECOFIN Council, Yannis Stournaras, made the following statement:

“I warmly welcome the approval today by the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU (COREPER) of the compromise agreement reached by the Hellenic Presidency in its negotiations with the European Parliament on the Single Resolution Mechanism.

European Parliament, EU states reach deal on banking union

BRUSSELS: EU member states and the European Parliament reached an accord on Thursday on a new regulatory system designed to prevent a failing bank from wrecking the economy.
Parliament had opposed an agreement reached in December by EU leaders on how to close down a bank in trouble, saying it was too unwieldy, but the European People's Party (EPP) said these differences had now been resolved.
The EPP, the biggest party in Parliament, said the process would be speeded up so as to ensure that a problem bank can be closed down in the space of a weekend to avoid markets turmoil on a Monday.

Στις Βρυξέλλες μεταβαίνει σήμερα ο πρωθυπουργός Αντώνης Σαμαράς, προκειμένου να συμμετάσχει στη Σύνοδο Κορυφής του Ευρωπαϊκού Συμβουλίου. Θα προηγηθεί Σύσκεψη Αρχηγών του Ευρωπαϊκού Λαϊκού Κόμματος.
Ο πρωθυπουργός επιστρέφει στην Αθήνα αύριο.
Στο επίκεντρο της Συνόδου θα βρεθεί η τραπεζική ένωση η οποία αποσκοπεί στην αποτροπή του κινδύνου να ξεσπάσει μια νέα κρίση στην Ευρωζώνη.
