Alleged Chlorine Gas Attacks Focus Renewed Attention on Syria

WASHINGTON — The international organization overseeing the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons is now focusing on investigating possible chlorine gas attacks in that country.

If proven, they would add another chapter into Syria’s long history of using chemical substances as weapons.

Under Western pressure, Syria has destroyed the vast majority of the chemical weapons arsenal declared by the Damascus government to be 1,300 metric tons.

Greg Thielmann, an expert on weapons of mass destruction with the Arms Control Association, said Syria’s arsenal contained different types of chemicals.

Turkish patrol seizes over a ton of chemicals from smugglers at Syria border.

Turkish border guards seized three vehicles loaded with over 1,000 kg of chemicals as they tried to illegally cross the border into Syria. One of the smugglers was arrested, while others managed to escape. The Turkish General Staff reported that the chemicals were seized after a convoy of three vehicles refused to stop and attempted to illegally cross the border near the southeastern Turkish town of Reyhanli on Saturday.

Paramilitary police were ordered to shoot out the tires of the vehicles to stop them. As the tires caught on fire, the three drivers jumped out and fled in the direction of Syria. One of them was arrested.

Chemical Weapons Must Be Seized From Syria Rebels – Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu

MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s defense minister said Wednesday that chemical weapons in Syria must be seized from the rebels as well as the government. 

“It’s necessary to remove such weapons from the militants and destroy [them],” Sergei Shoigu told reporters after a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council.

The defense minister stopped short of outright blaming the Syrian opposition for a sarin gas attack that killed hundreds of people and injured thousands more in a suburb outside Damascus in August, but said the attack was a result “of what happens if chemical weapons fall into the hands of terrorists.”

Από το «κόσκινο» των ειδικών πέρασαν τα σοκαριστικά ερασιτεχνικά βίντεο με τα θύματα από την επίθεση στη Συρία, που είδαν το φως της δημοσιότητας... 

Σύμφωνα με τις αναλύσεις, οι ειδικοί καταλήγουν πως τα συμπτώματα που εμφανίζουν τα θύματα είναι αυθεντικά και προέρχονται από δηλητηρίαση με τοξικό αέριο. Grauenvolle Videos und Fotos kursieren seit gestern durchs Netz. Zu sehen sind Kinder mit Schaum vor dem Mund, zitternde Menschen mit gelähmten Gliedmaßen und weiß eingehüllte Leichen auf dem Boden eines Krankenhauses. Laut der syrischen Opposition zeigen sie die Opfer eines Giftgas-Angriffes, den das Assad-Regime auf Rebellenhochburgen nahe Damaskus verübt haben soll. Doch ob das stimmt, ist noch lange nicht gewiss: Sind die Videos echt? Wenn ja – war es wirklich ein Giftgas-Angriff? Und war das Assad-Regime tatsächlich Täter?
