Conflict in Syria ‘a war on terror,’ Deputy Prime Minister tells UN General Assembly.

30 September 2013 – The conflict ravaging Syria is not a civil war but a war on terror, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister said today in his turn at the rostrum at the high-level debate that opens the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.
“There is no civil war in Syria, but it is a war against terror that recognizes no values, nor justice, nor equality, and disregards any rights or laws,” Walid Al-Moualem, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, told the Assembly, which began its General Debate on 24 September, offering would leaders an opportunity to weigh in on issues of national and global concern.

Οι επιθεωρητές του ΟΗΕ για τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα ελπίζουν να μπορέσουν να μεταβούν σύντομα στη Συρία για να ερευνήσουν τις καταγγελίες για διάπραξη εγκλημάτων πολέμου και άλλες παραβιάσεις του διεθνούς δικαίου, δήλωσε σήμερα η Κάρλα ντελ Πόντε, μέλος της επιτροπής έρευνας του ΟΗΕ για τη Συρία.

Η Ντελ Πόντε δεν διευκρίνισε πότε θα γίνει η επίσκεψη αυτή, όμως σημείωσε ότι θα πραγματοποιηθεί είτε υπάρξει στρατιωτική επέμβαση στη Συρία είτε όχι.
«Είμαστε σε επαφή με τις συριακές αρχές και βρισκόμαστε σε καλό δρόμο», δήλωσε η Ντελ Πόντε στους δημοσιογράφους, επισημαίνοντας ότι οι συνθήκες θα πρέπει να είναι κατάλληλες ώστε η ομάδα να μπορέσει να εργαστεί.

UN Chief Urges Political Solution to Syria Crisis at G20 Summit.

STRELNA, September 6 (RIA Novosti) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged G20 nation leaders at their summit in the Russian city of St. Petersburg to find a political solution to the “unprecedented” humanitarian crisis in Syria.

At a Friday morning meeting on the sidelines of the summit, the UN chief called on world leaders to convene as soon as possible the international conference on Syria in Geneva (known as “Geneva 2”), with the participation of senior Russian, US and UN officials.

Secretary General Ban said the humanitarian crisis in Syria is unprecedented in scale in recent history and the world should do everything to put an end to the sufferings of the Syrian people. He urged the participants to study the possible options for preventing further militarization of the conflict.
