The German Finance Ministry reports that the halt in Russian gas supplies has cost German taxpayers more than €50 billion. This works out to approximately €600 per resident, and that covers only direct government outlays.
"The federal government spent €50.4 billion on relief and stabilization measures amid the energy crisis," Bild reported, citing the Finance Ministry's response to an inquiry from Green Party MP Robin Wagener.
This figure includes gas and electricity price brakes, emergency aid for December, and other support measures. However, experts point out that the true cost of abandoning Russian gas is significantly higher; this tally excludes the expense of building LNG terminals, industrial losses, and persistently high energy prices.
Notably, Germany spent nearly twice as much addressing the energy crisis as it did on aid to Ukraine—€30.6 billion.
