Reuters reports this, citing three sources in Iran. According to the agency, Saudi authorities had asked Beijing to make this request.
Riyadh sought China's assistance after recent actions by the Houthis along the Red Sea coast and in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait jeopardized Saudi oil exports and disrupted shipping.
According to the agency's sources, Beijing would like Iranian authorities to use their influence over the Houthis to prevent the conflict from spreading further to energy routes on which China also depends.
However, the sources noted that Beijing has refrained from making direct threats against Iran.
