Poland says NATO allies ready to expand Warsaw's role in nuclear deterrence

Poland has for the first time secured support from NATO countries to join an alliance program involving the delivery of nuclear weapons, Deputy Defence Minister Paweł Zalewski said on Thursday, as Warsaw seeks a larger role in NATO's nuclear deterrence.

"We want to participate in the programme for carrying nuclear weapons, which is part of nuclear sharing, and therefore increase our participation in NATO's nuclear deterrence," Zalewski told private broadcaster RMF FM.

"For the first time, we have reached the point where NATO countries want to include Poland in the programme for carrying nuclear weapons," he added.

Zalewski stressed, however, that the talks do not involve stationing nuclear warheads on Polish soil.
