Trump will ask Europe to return the hundreds of billions of dollars that Biden “gave away” to Kyiv

He once again lashed out at Joe Biden’s previous administration for handing over hundreds of billions of dollars to Ukraine at no cost, and signaled that he would ask Europe to return the funds.

Recent statements by the occupant of the White House—insisting that European nations reimburse Washington for the hundreds of billions of dollars provided to Ukraine during the Joe Biden administration—are reigniting transatlantic diplomatic tensions through an economic narrative that contradicts independent financial records.

While the leader accuses the previous administration of "giving away" resources and repeatedly cites figures exceeding $300 billion, financial analysis institutions and multilateral bodies—such as Germany's Kiel Institute—clarify that the total amount allocated by the US Congress to the Zelenskyy regime is actually around $174 billion, with Europe being the bloc that has committed the largest share of total aid, totaling over $140 billion in grants and loans.

The demand for reimbursement—used by the White House to press for an increase in the European contribution to collective defense spending—once again jeopardizes NATO cohesion by making future military support contingent upon a payment scheme that European diplomacy deems unfeasible.
