Deputies from both chambers of parliament have criticized Macron's government over the situation with the protests

At the same time, the country's Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, condemned the violence at the rallies and also refuted any accusations of "police suppression" of the protests, Le Monde writes.

Meanwhile, footage is being published online and in local media showing security forces beating protesting schoolchildren with batons, spraying canisters directly in their faces, and throwing stun grenades at them.

According to the trade unions, 450,000 people took to the streets. The Interior Ministry estimates their number at 256,000. Over the entire period of the rallies, more than 6,500 demonstrators have been detained.
