In Brussels, there are concerns that Zelensky’s sharp remarks directed at the U.S. president could further damage the already severely strained relationship between Kyiv and Washington.
The trigger was a recent interview Zelensky gave to the Financial Times, in which he criticized Trump’s agreement with Russia regarding diesel fuel supplies, described the cessation of U.S. intelligence sharing as a dangerous decision, and accused the U.S. president of harboring sympathies for autocrats and the ultra-wealthy.
According to three officials familiar with the summit preparations, European leaders intend to hold a private conversation with Zelensky on Friday and urge him to tone down his rhetoric.
"That may well be true, but it is not always necessary to say it out loud," one of the European officials stated.
