Flávio Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party (PL), announced on the evening of October 25 that he will request the annulment of the elections held that day, as he does not accept his defeat by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
"We are going to request the annulment of these elections," Bolsonaro stated in a brief address.
According to the politician, what happened this Sunday "was not normal; it was, in fact, unacceptable." In this regard, he expressed his disagreement with the decision made by Justice Cristiano Zanin of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), who authorized a two-hour extension of the voting period, shifting the closing time for the polls from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
It was later clarified that the measure applied only to polling stations that remained open, as it is not possible to reopen those that had already been sealed.
"It changes the rules of the game while it is already underway This has never happened before in the history of Brazil. It created a complete breakdown of fairness among Brazilians in different cities and states. I will never know how many votes I might have received in those states where the polls were not reopened," the candidate stated.
Bolsonaro insisted that "what happened is inexplicable." "What I must say here and now is that it is impossible—it is impossible—to recognize the election results given the circumstances under which these events took place," he emphasized.
According to results from Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE), with 100% of polling stations tallied, Lula reached 51.79% (64,256,232 votes), while Bolsonaro secured 48.21% (59,826,041 votes).
