Ali Bagheri, the deputy secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, says top defence officials from the “Mecca Defence Alliance” are due to visit Tehran for talks on regional security.
Bagheri told the IRIB state broadcaster that Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistani Army Commander General Asim Munir, and Turkish Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin would take part in the talks with the Secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, in Tehran.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s model of defence based on internal and domestic capabilities has become a successful model for building national security,” Bagheri told the broadcaster. “Iran’s strategic policy is to ensure regional security through regional countries and confront any foreign interference and influence led by the American and Israeli regimes.”
The IRIB report did not state when the meeting would take place, but the Reuters news agency, citing two people with knowledge of the matter, said it will happen today.
The meeting is the first high-level contact between Iran and all members of the three-nation bloc since Saudi Arabia came under escalating attacks from Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis.
