Democrats on the US House Foreign Affairs committee have criticised President Donald Trump over rising fuel costs and his decision to buy Russian diesel.
Representative Gregory Meeks, the committee’s top Democrat, blamed the war on Iran for higher gasoline and diesel prices in a post on the committee Democrats’ X account.
“His disastrous Iran war has sent gas and diesel costs soaring and Americans are paying the price,” Meeks said.
He also criticized Trump’s announcement on Friday that the US would buy Russian energy, saying it came weeks after the president signed legislation to sanction buyers of Russian fuel.
“I condemn this reversal: Instead of putting economic pressure on Putin for his invasion of Ukraine, Trump continues to appease him”, Meeks said.
Trump earlier said Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel, with additional shipments planned for November and thereafter.
