Israel’s Foreign Ministry condemns attack by settlers on EU diplomats

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has strongly condemned the "serious acts of violence" committed by Israeli rioters in the area of the West Bank town of Taybeh.

He noted that a police investigation has already been launched and that forensic experts are at the scene collecting evidence.

Saar added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the ambassadors of the countries involved to assist law enforcement authorities, who are working to identify the attackers and bring them to justice.

He also expressed regret that the visit had not been coordinated in advance with the Israel Defense Forces, noting that such coordination could have helped ensure the safety of the visitors.

  •    Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries in northern France, was among those attacked by masked Israeli settlers in Taybeh, near Ramallah, the last Palestinian village whose population is entirely Christian.

His town council voted earlier this year to twin Aulnoye-Aymeries with Taybeh, and promised to bring humanitarian aid in the autumn.

The delegation, which included diplomats from France, Belgium and Poland, as well as the French consul in Jerusalem, was visiting during the olive harvest.
