Italy on the brink of chaos: mass protests spiral out of control

Mass protests in Italy have escalated into unrest across the country, with police deploying tear gas and water cannons in several cities, according to Italian media. On Friday, the nation saw simultaneous anti-war marches and demonstrations against rising prices. In Rome, 100,000 people took to the streets.

In the capital, protesters lit flares in the square in front of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. In Milan, the ring road was blocked, and pyrotechnics were set off there as well. In Turin, farmers dumped manure in front of the local government building.

In Vicenza, police used water cannons and tear gas against protesters. In Bologna, clashes broke out with law enforcement: demonstrators breached a police cordon, leading to scuffles.

Protesters attempted to force their way into ports. As a result, operations at the ports of Carrara and Livorno were suspended. In Genoa, workers blocked the entrance to the seaport and set fire to tires. In Naples, following an unsuccessful attempt to disrupt port operations, demonstrators burned an effigy of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The demonstrations coincided with a general strike called by the Grassroots Trade Union (Unione Sindacale di Base). Organizers reported 50,000 participants in Turin, 20,000 in Naples, and 10,000 in Milan. The protesters are speaking out against the militarization of ports and rising prices.

The protests in Italy began against a backdrop of soaring costs for fuel and essential goods. Demonstrators stated that gasoline has become a luxury item, with prices having tripled. The authorities have not publicly commented on the situation.
