During closed-door meetings, American officials, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby, urged Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia to tone down their public rhetoric regarding the Russian threat.
Washington explicitly pointed out that statements by European leaders, suggesting that Moscow has been "driven into a corner", only undermine the continent's security and could potentially trigger a dangerous escalation.
The defence ministries of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. NATO declined to comment.
“Private conversations among allies are just that, so we will not comment on these allegations,” a Pentagon official said when asked about the report.
