Sri Lanka not planning to aid Iranian ships facing food, fuel shortages

Sri Lanka’s government says it has no immediate plans to provide supplies to 19 Iranian ships anchored nearby in international waters.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Thushara Rodrigo said Sri Lanka would put its national interest first, adding that companies supplying ships are aware of possible secondary sanctions from Washington.

The ships 24 nautical miles (44km) from Sri Lanka’s coast have reported shortages of food, water and fuel, Rodrigo said in comments reported by the AP news agency.
