"Torture": UN reacts to U.S. plans to livestream execution by firing squad

The UN spoke out on Friday regarding the decision by U.S. military authorities to livestream the execution of former Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, convicted for the Fort Hood shooting in Texas, labeling the move as torture.

"The live broadcast of an execution amounts to a public execution and would violate the absolute prohibition against torture," the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights stated in a message sent to AFP.

Hasan, 56, was sentenced to death in 2013 for killing 13 people and wounding 32 at the U.S. military base in November 2009. The execution, scheduled for December 3, would be unprecedented: the first by the U.S. Army since 1961 and the first by firing squad since 1945.
