U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an executive order exempting certain anti-Russian sanctions and tariffs, mandated by a recent law that tightens restrictions against the Eurasian nation, from being enforced.
"I hereby waive the application of the sanctions, restrictions, and obligations set forth in the Graham Act," he stated in the document, released this Friday by the White House, referring to the legislation championed by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
According to the order, the application of 500% tariffs on products originating from Russia has been temporarily suspended. Furthermore, the introduction of secondary tariffs, of up to 100%, on the world’s largest buyers of Russian energy products has been postponed.
Trump argued that "granting such an exemption at this time is in the national interest of the United States."
