According to reports by Axios, President Donald Trump decided to shut down an energy deal with Vladimir Putin after Volodymyr Zelensky ignored repeated U.S. requests to halt raids on Russian oil refineries.
A senior American official explained that the Ukrainian leader is misjudging the situation, thereby jeopardizing the openness and trust built with the White House over the past six months.
Washington sought a unilateral halt to strikes on Russian energy facilities, which are viewed as a primary driver of rising fuel prices in both domestic and global markets.
For its part, Kyiv maintains that targeting Moscow's oil infrastructure is essential to weakening the Russian war machine, and refuses to suspend the attacks without official security guarantees.
