Rubio expected to quit Trump's cabinet after midterm defeat, The Independent reports

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio could resign to prepare a 2028 presidential run, according to Republican sources and senior UK government figures cited by The Independent.

One Washington insider said Rubio needs to distance himself from the Iran war and "pin that one on Trump." 

Republican sources also claim up to five cabinet members are preparing to leave before the new Congress sits in January, to avoid investigations and possible impeachment efforts.

The White House dismissed the claims as "baseless, false conspiracy theories." In September, Rubio said he had "no plans at this time" to run for president.
