Germany warns Israel over settlement building

Israel's ongoing settlement construction is damaging efforts to reach a negotiated peace agreement, visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Monday.
Berlin's top diplomat was in Israel for a 24-hour visit to discuss the peace process which was largely overshadowed by the death at the weekend of Israel's controversial former prime minister Ariel Sharon who was laid to rest on Monday.
He met with Israel's chief negotiator Tzipi Livni early on Monday then attended both a state memorial service and Sharon's funeral before travelling to Ramallah for an evening meeting with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.
"It is clear that the continued building of settlements really hurts the process," he told reporters before his meeting with Livni, while stressing that Berlin also expected the Palestinians "to do their part".

UN chief praises political courage, determination of Israel's Ariel Sharon

11 January 2014 – Saddened by the death of Ariel Sharon, former Prime Minister of Israel, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today praised the late statesman's political courage and determination, and urged the country to build on Mr. Sharon's legacy of pragmatism to press ahead with the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson in New York, Mr. Ban offered his condolences to the late leader's bereaved family and to the Government and people of Israel. Mr. Sharon, 85, became incapacitated by a severe stroke in 2006. He passed away earlier today at a hospital near Tel Aviv.
“Throughout a life dedicated to the State of Israel, Ariel Sharon was a hero to his people, first as a soldier and then a statesman,” said the Secretary-General.

Ariel Sharon, the controversial self-styled "warrior" who dominated Israel's military and political landscape for decades, has died eight years after a massive stroke left him in a vegetative state.
The former army general and prime minister suffered multiple organ failure over the new year. His sons were at his bedside at the Sheba Medical Centre, a long-term care facility near Tel Aviv, where Sharon has lain since May 2006.

Hoy hace siete años del día en que Sharon, que tiene ahora 84 años, sufrió una hemorragia cerebral que le mantiene postrado en el hospital Tel Hashomer, cerca de Tel Aviv, y que ha ido perdiendo progresivamente la atención de los medios y la población.
