African Union Suspends Participation of Niger following Coup
The African Union (AU) has suspended Niger from all its activities following a military coup on July 26, it said in a statement released on Tuesday, reiterating calls for the coup leaders to release elected President Mohamed Bazoum and return to their barracks.

Ο Barroso χαιρετά τη «θαρραλέα» γαλλική δράση στο Μάλι
Το Παρίσι έστειλε περισσότερα στρατεύματα στο Μάλι χθες, μετά την
έναρξη μιας αποστολής, με στόχο να αποκόψει την επαφή της Αλ Κάιντα με
τους αντάρτες, στα βόρεια της χώρας την Παρασκευή (11 Ιανουαρίου). Ο
Πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής, José Manuel Barroso, δήλωσε την υποστήριξή του
για τη «θαρραλέα δράση των γαλλικών στρατευμάτων».
Οι γαλλικές επιθέσεις εναντίον θέσεων των ισλαμιστών κοντά στις αρχαίες εμπορικές πόλεις στην έρημο του Τιμπουκτού και του Gao, τη μεγαλύτερη πόλη του βορρά, σηματοδότησε μια αποφασιστική παρέμβαση στην περιοχή από την Παρασκευή, η οποία περιορίζει την προώθηση των ανταρτών προς το νότο, αφότου αυτοί πήραν τον έλεγχο του Βόρειου Μάλι τον Απριλίου.
Η Γαλλία είναι αποφασισμένη να τελειώσει την ισλαμική κυριαρχία στο βόρειο Μαλί, που πολλοί φοβούνται ότι θα μπορούσε να λειτουργήσει ως βάση για επιθέσεις εναντίον της Δύσης και σύνδεση με την Αλ-Κάιντα της Υεμένης, της Σομαλίας και της Βόρειας Αφρικής.
