MFA,Thursday, 30 January 2014

E. VENIZELOS: The exploration for the hydrocarbons that exist on the Greek continental shelf and the Greek exclusive economic zone are a firm and substantial priority for our government.

Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister Yiannis Maniatis and I, along with our associates, met so that we could all be equally up to date and have the same picture regarding the results of the very important seismic explorations carried out in previous months, regarding the analysis of the results of the seismic exploration, and, naturally, regarding the next steps that will lead to the selection of the concessionaires, precisely as has been done for other regions as well.

No tension over Russian aircraft near Turkey's airspace. Regarding recent claims that Greek coast guard boats intervened in Turkish boats in the waters of the Imia islands, Davutoglu said....

The incident over the Black Sea on Wednesday in which Turkish F-16 jets pursued a Russian military aircraft flying near Turkish airspace [1] must not be assessed as a sign of tension between the countries, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Saturday.

Davutoglu explained the Russian aircraft was conducting a drill in accordance with international law, and the pursuit by Turkish F-16s was merely an automatic response toward objects approaching airspace.

Davutoglu responded to questions during a press conference at the ministry in Ankara with his Bulgarian counterpart Kristian Vigenin.

“Sometimes such measures are taken between nations amid these types of exercises... there is no reason to blow this case out of proportion,” he said.

EEZ as a bargaining chip

N. Lygeros (OPUS)
Translated from the Greek by Evi Charitidou
One of the main advantages of the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone, especially after having it proclaimed, is that it constitutes a bargaining chip. The Greek EEZ is not simply a huge maritime area it also means huge hydrocarbon deposits, which follow in a geological series those of Israel (especially Leviathan and Tamar deposits) and of Cyprus (Aphrodite deposit). This probability, since required drilling has not yet taken place, already changes the given at geopolitical level by offering an extremely positive context to the Greek government at a time when it fights to change the economic status of our country and is involved in talks with other countries.

EEZ as economic tool

N. Lygeros (OPUS)
Translated from the Greek by Evi Charitidou

As we get prepared for proclaiming the Greek EEZ, namely for materializing the first stage, we already have to study its strategic depth as well. This may take place by examining foreign cases. Other states have considered EEZ to be an economic tool. At this period, due to economic difficulties Italy puts emphasis on block charting, to allot sea areas to foreign companies for extracting hydrocarbons.
