Turkey's defense spending reaches $13.2 billion. -- 1.71 %t of its gross domestic product (GDP)

Turkey’s defense spending stood at 29.4 billion Turkish Liras ($13.2 billion) this year, Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz said on Nov. 2, in response to a parliamentary question from a deputy of the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Turkey spent some 1.71 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on defense in 2014, a drop from the 3.5 percent of its GDP spent on defense in 2002, Yılmaz said, adding that the 2014 defense budget accounted for 3.7 percent of the overall state budget.

China criticizes US for X-band radar deployment in Kyoto

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the move damages peace and stability in the region.

She made the comment after media reports said U.S. military has delivered X-band radar to the Kyogamisaki military base in Kyoto on Tuesday.

The radar, reportedly used to scan for missile launches from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is expected to start operation within this year.

KIEV - A senior aide to Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko said on Sunday Kiev had reached agreement during the NATO summit in Wales on the provision of weapons and military advisers from five member states of the alliance.

NATO Defense Ministers will review collective defense measures in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine crisis, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at the start of the two-day ministerial meeting on Tuesday. 

Claiming NATO is "facing a new security landscape" because of Ukraine crisis, Mr. Fogh Rasmussen said that "We have already taken immediate steps. In a strong show of solidarity, every single Ally, from both sides of the Atlantic, contributes to bolstering our collective defense, including deployment of ships, aircraft and troops."

Hollande asks Vatican to receive Syrian opposition

French President Francois Hollande asked Pope Francis receive a delegation from Syria's main opposition groups on Friday to the Vatican, AFP reported.
Hollande is currently on a diplomatic visit to Rome.
"I expressed my desire that the Vatican could host the Syrian National Coalition," Hollande announced after the meeting.

Lebanese army to receive $3 billion from Saudi ‘to purchase French arms’

Lebanese President Michel Sleiman said Sunday that Saudi Arabia will give $3 billion to buy weapons from France to help support and strengthen the Lebanese army.

The surprise announcement was made during a televised national address as French President François Hollande was visiting Saudi Arabia. Sleiman called the $3 billion in aid "the largest grant ever given to the country’s armed forces", but he did not provide any further details.

Russian foreign and defense ministers travelled to Cairo on Wednesday in a landmark two-day visit expected to revive ties between the two countries amid tension between Egypt and the United States.
