Ukraine should swiftly form a new government and launch reforms, MEPs told the country's leaders following the parliamentary elections on Sunday won by pro-European parties

The European Parliament was present with an observation mission to ensure the elections were run fairly and transparently. In a meeting with Ukraine's president and prime minister the following day, the MEPs vouched to do everything in the EP's power to help implement the recently ratified association agreement.

BRUSSELS: European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso warned Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday (Oct 1) not to impose new trade measures against Kiev, saying it would threaten an agreement with Russia to delay a landmark EU-Ukraine pact.

"We have strong concerns about the recent adoption of a decree by the Russian government proposing new trade barriers between Russia and Ukraine," Barroso told Putin in a letter released by the Commission.

Poroshenko: Ukraine-EU association agreement to come into force from November 1

The association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union will fully come into force from November 1, 2014, Ukrainian President Petr Poroshenko said on Sunday.

“There will be no return to the past,” Poroshenko said in an interview with the 1+1 television channel. “The agreement comes into full force from November 1 of the current year. There will be no delays, nothing of the kind. In the course of talks, we were granted the right to protect our market.”

Ukrainian, European Parliaments Ratify Ukraine's EU Association Deal

The parliaments of Ukraine and the European Union simultaneously ratified Ukraine's Association Agreement with the EU Tuesday.

The Verkhovna Rada approved the bill by 355 lawmakers with the required minimum of 226 “yes” votes.

The Ukrainian president signed the ratification deal immediately after and told the government to prepare implementation bill for the agreement by Wednesday.
