Four Italian military personnel have been injured during NATO exercises at the Adazi training ground in Latvia, according to the Italian Defense Ministry.
"For reasons that are currently being investigated, an incident involving firearms mounted on an Italian military vehicle occurred during the exercises. The shots hit another Italian military vehicle, which was carrying four servicemen," the ministry said on X.
According to the ministry, the injured servicemen are members of the 11th Bersaglieri Regiment and were involved in the NATO Forward Land Forces ground forces mission.

"According to the Italian Ministry of Defense, their vehicle was fired upon by a machine gun mounted on an Italian Dardo infantry fighting vehicle. The exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear," the publication reports.
According to Der Spiegel’s account of the situation, they were victims of "friendly fire": Italian troops were fired upon by a machine gun mounted on an Italian infantry fighting vehicle.
"None of the four injured individuals is in life-threatening condition. The military has launched an investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the incident," Der Spiegel notes.
