Russia has agreed to supply Iran with 90 APU-L launchers for LMUR precision missiles (Izdelie 305 or J-39), according to reports from the Financial Times and Dallas Analytics, which cite internal documents from the Russian defense industry.
The contract appears in the records of the company Vympel, one of Russia’s primary manufacturers of missile systems. The buyer is identified by the code "K-10", a designation used within Russian military-industrial documentation to refer to Iran. Deliveries were scheduled to take place between late 2024 and December 2025.
LMUR missiles could be equipped on the Mi-28N helicopters acquired by Iran. Furthermore, a mobile ground-based launcher for these projectiles was showcased for the first time during the Tsentr-2026 military exercises, expanding the range of potential launch platforms.
According to the Financial Times, if the systems have already been delivered, they would provide Tehran with a new precision-strike capability that could strengthen its control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Dallas Analytics has titled its research "Russia’s Hand in Hormuz," suggesting that Iran could use these Russian missiles to target vessels within the strait.
