Man trampled as hundreds of desperate Greeks scuffle for food (PHOTOS)

A fruit and vegetable handout in Greece led to one man being trampled on Wednesday, calling attention to the desperate conditions in the crisis-hit country. Some 55 tons of produce was given away by farmers who were protesting high production costs.
The person was injured when he was pushed by a crowd trying to grab the goods and fell and hit his head.
The chaos was sparked when food stalls ran out of fruits and vegetables, prompting dozens of people to rush to a nearby truck.
It was an “every man for himself” situation as the Greeks shoved their way to the front of the truck, competing for the food that was left. The 55 tons of food was completely gone in under two hours.

As disastrous civil war continues to ravage Syria, Christian communities across the country gathered to attend Christmas masses and pray for peace in the strife-torn land after almost two years of violence.
"I pray that peace and safety returns to the hearts of all Syrians," Heba Shawi, a Catholic attending mass at Notre Dame church in the Damascus district of Qusur told AFP. "I hope the smiles come back to children's faces."
Bishop Joseph al-Absi, who led the mass at the Melkite Greek Catholic Cathedral in Damsacus, prayed for peace in Syria, asking God to protect the country and it leadership, according to SANA news agency.

Greek protesters assault German diplomat

Greek protesters enraged by civil service lay-offs have thrown water and coffee at Germany's consul in the northern city of Thessaloniki amid chants of "Kick out the Nazis", police say.
The protesters also tried to kick and punch Wolfgang Hoelsche-Obermaier, the consul, on the sidelines of a conference on Greek-German trade initiatives on Thursday.
"These people haven't come here to help us, but to announce our death sentence," Themis Balasopoulos, leader of Greece's municipal workers union, who was at the demonstration, said.

Striking Greek policemen have clashed with riot police, after blockading their colleagues' headquarters in Athens.
Regular policemen joined a strike by firemen, coast guards and court workers protesting the latest round of austerity cuts in the crisis-stricken country. The newest budget reductions amount to more than $14 billion over the coming two years.

Greek suicide epidemic continues: Debt-strapped pensioner hangs himself ...

A 61-year-old Greek pensioner has hung himself from a tree in a public park after succumbing to the pressure of crushing debt. A note in his pocket indicates he is merely the latest in a rash of economic crisis-induced suicides.

The pensioner’s lifeless body was found dangling by an attendant in a public park not far from his home in the suburb of Nikaia, Athens. The attendant also found a suicide note in the man’s pocket, The Athens news reports.

The man, identifying himself as Alexandros, said he was a man of few vices who “worked all day.”  However, he blamed himself from committing one “horrendous crime”: becoming a professional at the age of 40 and plunging himself into debt. He referred to himself as a 61-year-old idiot who had to pay, hoping his grandchildren would not be born in Greece, as the country’s prospects were so bleak.

German leader Angela Merkel last night called for Greece to determine its European future once and for all by holding a referendum on its euro membership alongside next month's general election.
The surprise suggestion, made in a phone call with Greek President Carolos Papoulias, was immediately rejected. "It is clear that the matter is beyond the competence of the caretaker government," the office of Prime Minister Panagiotis Pikrammenos said.

This morning I received the following video* in my email. I must confess that watching it had a profound effect on me. I felt emptiness to the very core of my entire existence. It purports to show how proud modern Greeks are about their selves, in what I consider, a very disturbing way.

Neo-fascist party Golden Dawn is set to enter the Greek Parliament. Exit polls in Sunday’s election show the extreme-nationalist organization has won about seven per cent of the vote – well above the required three-per-cent threshold.

­This is the first time in nearly 40 years that a far-right party is projected to enter Greece’s parliament.

Greek vote to tip balance in EU crisis ...

Greeks are casting their votes in crucial parliamentary elections amid a spiraling economic crisis. Analysts predict Greece’s two long-term ruling parties will lose their majority, potentially endangering the country’s debt obligations.

Currently opinion polls show no clear winner emerging from Sunday’s parliamentary election, however voters are expected to punish the two main parties that have alternated leadership for the last 38 years.

Typically the socialist PASOK and center-Right New Democracy take around 80 per cent of the vote, but this time there are doubts they will even get 50 per cent needed to stay in power.
