Mohsen Rezaee, a member of a council that advises Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a retired major general in the Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), also sent out a tweet on Thursday night vowing swift retaliation to the assassination.
“Martyr [#Qasem Soleimani] … joined his martyred brothers, but we will take vigorous revenge on America,” he said.
A number of US airstrikes near Baghdad’s International Airport earlier on Thursday left Soleimani and several Iraqi militia leaders dead, with two other Iraqi commanders reported arrested by US Marines. The Pentagon later confirmed the strikes, stating they were “aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans.”

Gen Soleimani was a major figure in the Iranian regime. His Quds Force reported directly to the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and he was hailed as a heroic national figure.
US media reports say Gen Soleimani and officials from Iran-backed militias were leaving Baghdad airport in two cars when they were hit by a US drone strike near a cargo area.
The commander had reportedly flown in from Lebanon or Syria. Several missiles reportedly struck the convoy, and at least five people are thought to have died.
The drone strike comes days after protesters attacked the US embassy in Baghdad, clashing with US forces at the scene. The Pentagon said Gen Soleimani approved the attacks on the embassy.
According to the official media wing of Hashd Al-Sha’abi (Popular Mobilization Units), both General Soleimani and the leader of Kata’eb Hezbollah, Abu Mahdi Al-Mohandes, were killed as a result of the U.S. attack.
The Pentagon said that US President Donald Trump ordered General Soleimani's "killing," after a pro-Iran mob this week laid siege to the US embassy.
Following the General's death, President Trump tweeted an image of the US flag without any further explanation.
The Hashed confirmed that both Soleimani and its deputy chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in what it said was a "US strike."
It said: "The deputy head of the Hashed, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and head of the Quds Force, Qasem Soleimani, were killed in a US strike that targeted their car on the Baghdad International Airport road."
The Hashed is a network of mostly-Shiite armed units, many of who have close ties to Tehran but which have been officially incorporated into Iraq's state security forces.

The US airstrike that killed a senior Iranian commander near Baghdad will exacerbate tensions throughout the Middle East, the Russian foreign ministry has warned.
Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Quds Force, was killed in a US operation at Baghdad International Airport on Friday morning. Moscow considers the operation “an adventurous move that will lead to an escalation of tension throughout the region,” the ministry said.
“Soleimani served devotedly the cause of defending the national interests of Iran. We express our sincere condolences to the Iranian people,” the short statement said.

Airstrike Hits Iraqi-Syrian Border - Reports
An airstrike on the Iraqi-Syrian border and inside Syrian territory was reported by Al-Mayadeen, citing sources that claimed that forces deployed at the border made the security alert.
Local media claim, citing sources, that the new airstrikes were targeting installations of Iraq’s militia Kataeb Hezbollah in Al-Qaim region on the Iraqi-Syrian border.
Unconfirmed reports claim that at least 5 people were killed in the US strike targeting “Imam Ali” military base.
The region is reportedly known to host Iranian-backed militia forces. There has been no confirmation of the attack. The US Department of Defence has not issued any statement.
The airstrike comes on the heels of the previous attacks on Saturday that were reportedly carried out by US forces in Iraq targeting various military installations of the local militia.

On Saturday, the Iraqi capital witnessed several rocket attacks, including in the residential area of Al-Jadriya and the Balad military base that houses US forces, some 50 miles north of Baghdad.
According to a statement issued by the Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) on 4 January, during attacks near Iraqi bases that host coalition troops, "the International Zone took indirect fire that landed outside of Coalition facilities and potentially harmed Iraqi civilians".
The coalition statement notes that previous attacks that took place in November and December "killed and wounded Iraqi and Coalition personnel".
The release adds that earlier reports on attacks against the Ninewah Operation Centre in Mosul were false, calling on people to "request confirmation through government officials, instead of spreading rumors".

Iranian cabinet in a statement on Sunday announced the country's decision to take the final step to reduce commitments to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The cabinet said Iran will observe no restrictions in operational areas including enrichment capacities, enrichment percentage, the volume of enriched material as well as research.
The cabinet further stated in its statement that as the fifth step to reduce its commitments, Iran will abandon the last key restriction in the operation field put up the JCPOA literally "the limitations in the number of centrifuges".
Thus, it added, Iran's nuclear program face no kinds of restrictions in such areas and will go on solely according to the country's technical needs.
However, the cabinet stressed, Iran will continue cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as before.
Iran is ready to go back to its JCPOA commitments once the sanctions are removed and the country gets benefits from the nuclear deal, the cabinet announced.

In a Monday letter to Iraqi military leaders, the US-led coalition in Iraq announced it was preparing to "move out" of the country out of respect for Iraqi sovereignty.
Following approval of a non-binding resolution by Iraq's parliament calling for US forces to leave the country, US military commanders announced they were drawing up preparatory plans for their departure. A Pentagon spokesperson could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the letter to Reuters.
"We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure," the letter says, according to Reuters. US forces will re-position themselves over the coming days and weeks in preparation for the move, the letter states.

The US has no plans to pull out of Iraq, Defense Secretary Mark Esper told reporters after a letter to the government in Baghdad informing them of redeployment plans was published online.
"There's been no decision to leave Iraq. Period,” Esper told reporters at the Pentagon on Monday, in what appears to have been an off-camera briefing.

The IRGC issued a statement in the early hours of Wednesday local time, after launching a volley of missiles against two bases used by US forces inside Iraq, in retaliation for last week’s drone assassination of IRGC Quds Force leader Qassem Soleimani outside Baghdad.

This was presumably in reaction to reports that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu was trying to disassociate from the strike, calling it a purely American affair.

Iran was hit by two earthquakes on Wednesday, according to the USGS. One was 4.9-magnitude and registered at 2:20 GMT 10 kilometres from the Iranian city of Borazjan at a depth of around 10 kilometres. The tremors reportedly occurred not far from the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko has confirmed the number and country of origin of all passengers and crew on board the Ukrainian International Airlines Boeing 737-800 which crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran.
All 176 people on board were killed after the plane’s engine reportedly caught fire.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned of any US response to Tehran's reprisal for the assassination of IRGC Qods Force Commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, and said US pullout from the region is the main revenge to be taken from Washington.
"The Islamic Republic had to show a military reaction to the US government's measure and it did but this is not the end game. The end will be the withdrawal of the US which does not need military action and it is the result of the Americans' move and the result of support they showed in this arrogant and stupid move," Zarif told reporters in Tehran on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran has declared that if the US makes a mistake, it will definitely be given a response," he added.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran's military action was carried out, but as the Supreme Leader has said it was a slap in the face of the Americans, and the revenge will be the US pullout from the region," Zarif said, praising the IRGC's retaliatory missile attacks against the US bases.
He underlined that while public hatred for the US is on rise, "it is spending its last days in our region", adding that Washington has relied on wrong and dangerous consultations.

Tasnim News Agency has learned that Iran used sophisticated missiles with fragmentation warheads in an attack on the US airbase of Ain al-Assad in Iraq early Wednesday...
According to information obtained by Tasnim, the US missile defense systems in Iraq have failed to intercept any missile that the IRGC Aerospace Force rained down on Ain al-Assad airbase in Anbar province in western Iraq early Wednesday.
In the Iranian attack, launched in retaliation for the US assassination of top Iranian anti-terror commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, the IRGC Aerospace Force utilized the Fateh-313 and the Qiam missiles, with a range of 500 km and 800 km, respectively.
The Fateh-313 missiles have such a high velocity that the American defense systems have been unable to intercept any of the projectiles.
Moreover, the Qiam missiles fired in the overnight strike have been equipped with radar jamming systems and fragmentation warheads.
This was the first time that Iran has used such advanced missiles in a combat operation.
In June 2017, the IRGC had utilized Qiam for hitting the ISIS targets in Syria, but the missiles launched in that operation had regular warheads as the targets had been packed in a small area.
The fragmentation warhead in each of the Qiam missiles fired in the Wednesday strike have reportedly caused tens of explosions at the American airbase.
